It will not work if you do not have some rules, and keep to them.

Whenever you take your dog or puppy outside to wee, make sure you have a couple of treats with you, hidden from your pet until she performs for you in the way you want her to. The object is to reward the behaviour you want from her, then she will likely repeat it. This is the way to success.

Have your dog on a leash when you take her outside to toilet. Young dogs especially are easily distracted by so many things going on around them. So by leashing her you are helping to reduce these distractions. Take your time and be patient with her. When she does toilet, give her a reward straight away.

Decide on a keyword to use when you want her to toilet. This can be a single word, or a two word combination. Examples might be pee, and go pee, but you might prefer to your own choice. Once you have selected you keyword, be sure to keep to it.

Be vigilant when your puppy or dog is inside the house. Watch for the tell tale signs that she needs the toilet. These are likely to be circling movements, or sniffing. When you see this happening, take her outside straight away. You might make it outside in time. If not, do not be upset or angry, but be patient with her.

Signs of annoyance, such as shouting or threatening, will only confuse her and set back all the progress you have made so far in training her to potty outside.

Try to distinguish between toilet time and play time. The best plan is to have your dog or puppy go to the toilet before you let her play. This is a good plan for many reasons, mainly because, if the weather is bad, she always gets used to toileting first. That is your main priority.

Decide as well, how much time you want to allow her for toileting. Sometimes it happens quickly, other times you need to wait a while. If you decide ten minutes is enough, stick to that period of time, every time you take her outside.

Some days you will no doubt have more time to let her toilet than others. It is important to always be consistent with this allotted time, and if she has not been within the time frame, bring her inside. Give her fifteen minutes, then try again.

Don't forget to reward her every time she performs.

When she has toileted, don't forget to let her have some play time. Use another keyword for that activity, such as "go play."

How To Train a Puppy To Go Potty - A Planned Approach Is Best

Start to train a puppy to go potty the first day she joins the family. The longer you delay teaching her to do this the harder it becomes, so it is best dealt with straight away.

If you only leave it a few days before starting to train her, that is too long, if she has started making messes inside. So, do not delay, if you want to keep your house clean and smelling fresh.

It is important to realize that communicating with your puppy is essential if you are to be successful in housebreaking her. She needs to understand the message you are trying to pass on to her. So no bad temper or harsh words, or she might misunderstand your intent.

Puppy does not know you want her to toilet outside when you first begin the training. She cannot see anything wrong with peeing and pooping in the house, whenever she wants. Once she begins toileting in the house you will have very little warning when she next needs to go to the toilet. It will happen so fast, you will not have time to take avoiding action.

Begin the toilet training in a systematic fashion. That means drawing up a plan of action, and keeping to it. That is so important. You are dealing with an animal who cannot talk, so no variation in the plan for the best results, or puppy will be confused.

Some dog owners teach their pets to toilet inside. Opinion varies about the wisdom of this approach, but if you teach her only to toilet outside in the garden, and never inside, she will be less likely to treat the inside of your home as a toilet.

The plan needs to be a daily routine of feeding and potty breaks. Write down the times when they are to be taken and stick to the schedule. Puppies respond well to routines.

Puppy will need to relieve herself first thing in the morning, on waking, and after meals, as well as after playing and bathing. Young dogs cannot hold their bladders for long periods of time, so a lunchtime break is needed as well. If you cannot be there for that one, try to arrange for someone else to be at home.

If she is allowed to toilet in the house during this time she will think it is alright to do the same another time, and the longer she will take to house train.

The best approach is to give puppy plenty of potty breaks each day so she will have lots of chances to learn the behaviour you want her to learn.

Privacy Policy
Privacy Policy for http://pottytrainapuppy.blogspot.com/

If you require any more information or have any questions about our privacy policy, please feel free to contact us by email at psa.lm91.v.jer10.391@googlemail.com.

At http://pottytrainapuppy.blogspot.com/, the privacy of our visitors is of extreme importance to us.
